After the War of 1812, John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company was based on Mackinac Island and exported beaver pelts for thirty years. By the mid-nineteenth century, commercial fishing for common whitefish and lake trout had begun to supplant the fur trade as the major activity on the island. Hotels and restaurants hosted tourists as sport fishing grew increasingly popular in the 1880s.
